Damascus (Sword Dancer x Sun Glow) was an outstanding Thoroughbred racehorse who won many important races including the Preakness Stakes, the Belmont Stakes, the Jockey Club Gold Cup, the Wood Memorial, the Travers Stakes (by an amazing 22 lengths), and the Woodward Stakes. He was the American Horse of the Year in 1967. Damascus raced for Mrs. Edith W. Bancroft, whose father, William Woodward Sr., owned the famous Belair Stud. Out of his 32 starts, Damascus won 21 times, placed seven times, and came home third three times. He went on to sire 71 stakes winners during his stud career at Claiborne Farm in Kentucky. Damascus was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1974. Rohde's fine art portrait of Damascus is a great way to remember this excellent horse. Quote on bottom of piece under the horse's name reads: "He danced all the dances and ran all the distances...never did we see him spit out the bit." You can purchase this fine portrait of Damascus either unframed or framed in a beautiful brown wood designer frame with an antique white mat. Your Damascus horse racing art is hand signed and numbered by the artist and is of exceptional quality. A Certificate of Authenticity is included.
